Sunflower oil has been used as a natural skin care ingredient for hundreds of years all over the world, and it provides many benefits for the skin.  The sunflower is actually native to North America and was cultivated by Indigenous people a very long time ago – they used parts of the sunflower plant to help soothe snakebites and to condition the skin and hair.

Hopefully we don't have to deal with snake bites very often and in the mean time here are a few of the characteristics of Sunflower Oil which are helpful for skin care.  For starters, Sunflower oil is all natural and free from harmful chemicals or toxins.

The best choice for skin care is Cold Pressed Sunflower Oil.   In this process the seed is simply pressed at a low temperature to extract the oil from the seed.  No heat or chemicals are applied so the result is the most healthy and natural type of sunflower oil.

The main benefit when it comes to skin care for Sunflower Oil are its ability to soothe skin, strengthens the skin barrier, and hydrate the skin.  It is a very gentle and mild oil which can be used daily for all skin types. 

A major component of sunflower oil is vitamin E.  Sunflower oil contains more vitamin E than other vegetable oils.  Its an antioxidant that helps protect skin cells from harmful UV rays from the sun and other environmental stressors.

These are some of the benefits, how about ways of using it? 

You can use sunflower oil as a face cleanser:  rub a few drops between your fingers, then spread it all over your face. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and follow up with a regular cleanser. You can also use it to remove makeup with just put a few drops on a cotton ball.

To use sunflower oil as a face moisturizer, take a few drops of sunflower oil and rub it between your hands. Spread it all over your face and neck, avoiding the eye area.

To use Sunflower Oil for general skin care, pour a few drops on rough, dry or irritated skin and work in.

It has been used by mothers as a natural oil to help soothe baby diaper rash.  It also does wonders to help soften rough dry hands. 

Sunflower Oil can also be used to help with general healing of minor cuts and scrapes.  Apply a few drops and work into the skin and let the Vitamin E and other ingredients do its work. 

Sunflower Oil can also be used as a gentle massage oil and can be combined with essential oils such as Lavender and Eucalyptus to create unique aromatic blends.
