Thanks to everyone who attended the goat milk soap making workshop this past Sunday. I think everyone had a good time and learned a little about making soap too. Above, Mel and Donna are getting ready to milk Reese. Photo Album
Kevin Costner wasn’t the only star at the Spencerville Fair this past weekend. Patty took home Junior Champion for the Nubian breed so we were quite excited and proud. Thanks to Ed who showed her and of course Judy for the great breeding that produced her!
We’re worried that it may be going to her head though. This photo was taken after returning from the show and she was greeting Lucy and Marcie….
We entered our three doe kids into the goat show at the Perth Fair and came home with a third place ribbon for Marcie. She was born this Spring so was part of the Nubian Kids 3-9 month section. Lucy and Patty weren’t quite as lucky as they placed 6th and 9th respectively. The kids were away from their Mama’s for the day and all were happy to be reunited. More Photos
Thanks to everyone who attended this past weekend’s Kricklewood Farm Goat Milk Cheesemaking workshop sponsored by New Farm Project. (Thanks Miguel and Ian!) I think everyone would agree that the highlight was going right to the source for the milk! That and the abundance of garlic in the chevres!
Patty is now 3 weeks old and the other kids will be two weeks this weekend. I think we’re out of the woods except for bottle feeding the black kids of Avigail. Her mastistis seems to be clearing up but the udder is still huge and one of the teats is very red. Luckily the bottle feeding is only 4 times a day now – no 2 am feedings anymore! They are pretty much alternating between jumping around like monkeys for short periods, napping and eating. Who needs TV when you have these to watch? New Photo Album.
It’s been a busy few days around here, starting Friday morning at about 8:00 when Emily started contractions. She gave birth to a doe and buck around 10:00. She was a pro and everything went smoothly! Buddy enjoyed the leftover milk in the bottle which he snatched away while I wasn’t looking.
Avigail had a difficult delivery but in the end everything turned out ok. Two bucks and a doe. It started Friday evening but only came into labour Saturday morning about 8:00. The first one took a long time and we had a neighbour with small hands on standby to help if needed. There was almost an hour in between and then the last was ten minutes later.
The only downside is that she has mastitis and is only getting a small quantity of milk out of one side of the udder, which means bottle feeding. For now, 5 times a day including 2 am!
We’ve had a couple of sleepless nights but now it looks like she is out of the woods so here are a few photos. Thanks to Judy ‘Patricia’ Meyers for all her help!
Thanks to everyone who attended the first Fudgemaking workshop at Kricklewood Farm! The kitchen got a little crowded but the final result was amazingly tasty. We’re thinking about a goat milk cheesemaking course in the Spring, and if anyone is interested let us know so we can start planning now.
Come on down to Kricklewood Farm for the first ever Goat Milk Fudge making workshop! Saturday February 12th, just in time for Valentine’s Day, 10 am to 2 pm. Meet Devora, Emily, Avigail (left to right above) and their boytoy Silver!
